LESS than 48 hours to the rescheduled National Assembly elections in the country, operatives of the Nigerian Custom Services, NCS, have arrested two Nigerian for allegedly importing no fewer than 190 pairs of Military uniforms and dozens of bullet proof vest into the country. The two suspects simply identified as Imam and Bashir, were said to have smuggled the military hardware into the country aboard Egyptian airline flight 0573 from Beirut that landed at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport at about 12.45pm local time Wednesday.
Briefing Journalists on the development, Kano Customs Area Comtproller, Usman Azare, revealed that the suspects neatly concealed the goods in 8 cartons.
The Customs chief explained that the long arm of the law caught up with Bashir and Imam when the duo appeared at MAKIA to claim the goods.
He said: “The most interesting thing about these goods is that they are coming in at a particular time when our nascent democracy is being tested to the limit and we in customs and other agencies working with us will continue to keep vigil on any item that comes through this airport.”
The Custom Area Comtproller noted that the rationale behind anyone smuggling military hardware into the country at this moment of Nigeria’s nationhood raised a lot of security concern, stressing that the “act is heinous.”
He added that that the suspects had been handed over to relevant security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
