Intra-Party Disagreements Cost us Electoral Victory: Southwest PDP

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest has attributed the woeful performance of the party in the zone during last Saturday’s National Assembly election to the unresolved infighting in the party.
The PDP, which was the dominant party in the south west after the 2007 elections, won just one senatorial seat and six House of Representatives seats in the zone last Saturday.

The Vice Chairman of the party in the Southwest, Tajudeen Oladipo who spoke to journalists shortly after a special zonal meeting of the party in Osogbo, said the leadership of the party in the zone made frantic efforts to resolve the crises before the election but to no avail.

“Unresolved crises was, at the end of the day, the cause of our party’s poor performance in last Saturday’s election,” he said. “After reviewing the last Saturday’s National Assembly election on state by state basis and the various ways and peculiarities of each state, we found out that the intractable intra party wrangling which has divided the party in some states in the zone was among other reasons responsible for the poor performance of the party.”

The party, in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, expressed satisfaction at the conduct of the election and commended the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega for organising a credible, free and fair election.
Back to opposition

The party also said it regretted that out of the six geo-political zones in the country, only the south west has chosen to go back to opposition. While commending its candidates who lost at the poll for accepting the outcome of the election, the party stated that it would give support to any of them who might want to challenge the election results at the tribunals.
The party also encouraged all PDP members across the zone to, irrespective of the outcome of the National Assembly election, work hard to ensure victory for the party in Saturday’s presidential election.
