ELECTORAL materials, which were not available, leading to the rescheduling of the National Assembly elections till next Saturday, have arrived in Jos amidst tight security.
The Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Habu Zarma, confirmed that he received the materials for the polls last Sunday.
“The materials I have received are complete. We have been told not to distribute them until we are told to do so,” he said.
Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the rescheduling of the elections, as Mr. Alexander Molwus, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief of Staff to Governor Joshua Dariye, said he welcomed the postponement.
However, the Labour Party (LP) in the state has faulted the postponement, arguing that the action was an embarrassment.
According to Molwus, “Whatever is worth doing at last Saturday should be seen as one of the teething challenges as a nation. The fact that INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, owned up to the failure shows that the man is frank and a straightforward person, who does not want to mortgage the conscience of Nigerians.”
He advised Nigerians not to lose faith in the commission.
In his comment, another staunch supporter of the PDP in the state, Mr. Seyi Lawal, said: “The postponement is okay. We want a free and fair election that would be accepted by all.”
But the LP’s Publicity Secretary, Sylvanus Namang, said: “The failure to hold the polls is a big embarrassment to the nation. It has further dented the nation’s image that it cannot hold a credible election. But all said and done, we must commend Jega for accepting responsibility for the failure.
“If it were another person, he would have gone ahead with the elections in spite of the shortcomings of electoral materials and the elections would have been rigged for some interest group.”
