The junior national team, Flying Eagles no doubt have a very tall order to defeat the World champions, Ghana as they begin their quest for the Africa Youth Championship trophy today in South Africa.
Weighed by history, coach John Obuh, underscored the importance of today’s match when he told Cafonline.com that the expectations back home were high. Said he, “In every tournament, Nigerians have very high expectations irrespective of the age grade.
And anyone handling any team in that category or national team must have high expectations as well. So, mine is as high as what Nigerians are expecting. I believe we shall qualify for the Word Cup and go ahead to win the tournament”
With the availability of some of the best youth footballers Nigeria has and, coupled with one of the best preparatory programmes by a national team in recent times, Obuh has no excuse to fail. Nigerians do not expect less.
But the determination and resolve of the Ghanaian coach, Orlando Wellington and his team is what coach John Obuh and his wards will have to surmount.. Coach Orlando said the spirit in camp is high.
“We are in South Africa with a very positive and optimistic mind which is to defend the Cup successfully. We have prepared well. It is not going to be easy because other teams are as determined too.”
Obuh has however said he will not under rate any opponent, “ the worst mistake anyone can make is to under rate an opponent. I see all matches to be difficult but we have to take each one with great seriousness.”
The Nigeria/Ghana match comes up 11.00 am this morning. The second group match between Gambia and Cameroun comes up later in the evening.
