Christian leaders call for patience with INEC

GENERAL Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye and the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, yesterday, urged Nigerians not to be discouraged by the postponement of the National Assembly election by going out en masse to cast their votes whenever the umpire body was ready to conduct a free and fair poll.

Addressing a crowd of worshippers at the national headquarters of the church in Ebute Metta, Lagos, during a special prayer session for the transport sector, Pastor Adeboye said: “We all know that this month is very important in the history of Nigeria, therefore, I pray that the election will be free and fair. I also pray that only God’s people will get into the various places of power.”

The CAN president, Pastor Oritsejafor also urged Nigerians not be despondent because of the postponement, arguing that the elections are crucial to the survival of the nation “and that is why I will urge every Nigerian, who means well for this country to go out and vote for any candidate of his or her choice.”

Speaking to our reporter, Pastor Oritsejafor lamented the shame and ridicule the shoddy arrangement could bring to the nation, especially as the whole world was looking up to Nigeria to give direction to the rest of Africa.

In a similar development, the Fresh Democratic Party presidential candidate, Rev. Chris Okotie, who was not surprised at the development, said: “It is the usual manner of the PDP inept government to perpetuate itself in government. They will stop at nothing to achieve that desire and that is why they are creating that artificial scarcity, so that they can perfect their purpose of outwitting all opposition.”

The Christian Royal Fathers of Nigeria, a group comprising born-again traditional fathers across the country, has, meanwhile, called for the immediate resignation of chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the postponement of the National Assembly election.

The group, according to its national leader, Prophet Nnamdi Ofoegbu, said the reason advanced by Jega was not only puerile, but an insult to the collective sensibility of the people.
