Police enforce directive on tinted vehicles in Abuja

Many motorists were surprised by the action of the police in Abuja on Monday as they were forced to remove the artificial tint on their cars. This was in accordance with the order by the Minister of Police Affairs, Humphrey Abah, on the use of tinted vehicles.

The use of tinted vehicles, which is contrary to the provisions of the Prohibition of Tinted Glass Act, 1999, has become a fad in the Federal Capital Territory with two out of every five cars darkened with films which shield the identity of the occupants.

The minister had directed policemen across the states and the FCT to commence the enforcement on February 28, 2011, four days after handing down the directive. Many vehicle owners ignored the order in the belief that it would not be enforced.

But the recalcitrant motorists were jolted by teams of policemen, who commenced the enforcement as they mounted positions at various junctions and routes in Abuja.

Erring motorists were not spared by the policemen, who refused to listen to explanations as they enforced the ministerial order. Cars, belonging to Senators, House of Representatives members, ministers and other high-ranking officials were parked and stripped.

At the National Assembly gate, the enforcement team caused a long queue as they fished out defaulting motorists. No fewer than 100 motorists were forced to remove the dark films on their cars, the exception being those that had factory-fitted tints.

However, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Mr. Danladi Zhin, whose car was tinted got a reprieve when he explained to the taskforce members that he was rushing to an important meeting and promised to remove the film later. But the cover on the registration number was removed.

Also, the Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, did not suffer any delay as his Toyota Land Cruiser jeep was allowed to go when he pleaded that he be spared as he claimed to be rushing to a meeting.

At Wuse Zone 2, and other parts of Abuja, policemen forced several motorists to remove the tints on their vehicle glasses

The FCT Commissioner of Police, John Haruna, who monitored the compliance level, however, decried the refusal of car owners to obey the order.

He stated that the exercise, which commenced four days after the expiration of the minister’s ultimatum, was being stalled by the negative attitude of motorists.
