Militants warned yesterday that they would strike without warning. The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), in a reaction to government and security agents’ dismissal of its warning, issued on Monday, said it would launch bomb attacks in Abuja, Lagos and the Niger Delta.
But the police said there was no cause for panic.
In an online statement by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, yesterday the militant group “strongly” advised members of the public and all oil companies to disregard all attempts by the government and security agencies to dismiss its latest threat.
It said people caught in the bomb explosion, due to their ignorance, would only have themselves and the government to blame.
MEND said: “The same government that will abandon the casualties in an unequipped teaching hospital, while their family members travel abroad for medical treatment.
“We gathered that some agents from the United States are training some members of the Nigeria Police Force in bomb detection, detonation and making improvised bombs.
“We find this very laughable, coming from a country that cannot guarantee its own citizens’ security, with their overwhelmed prison system, coupled with useless and corrupt Nigerian police and security forces that will end up selling this knowledge.
“The government of Goodluck Jonathan has formed a habit of blaming its political opponents in other bomb attacks. So, when we start to strike, we will sit back and watch how the blame game will continue to be played out by the government, after our statements of claims have been issued.”
The militant group added that it was its desire to avoid civilian casualties, thereby strongly warning members of the public to steer clear of any political gathering or meeting of any sort, stressing that its fighters know their targets.
