Lagos built 147 roads in 4 years- Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Saturday said the state administration had built 147 roads while 60 others were in different stages of completion within four years in office.

He spoke at the Lagos State House, Marina, while addressing hundreds of transport workers in the private sector, who had participated in a solidarity rally in support of his bid to run for a second term in office as the state governor.

The transport workers comprised members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Owners Association of Nigeria, Lagos State Taxi Drivers and Cab Operators Association, Ajeigboro and Tipper Drivers Association and operators of commer cial motorcycles in the state.

The governor, who also said another 44 roads were under construction and rehabilitation, added that the state government was currently developing a light rail system and water transport system as part of the expansion of the transport sector.

The projects, he stressed, would in addition to easing the transport problems in the state, generate jobs for the people.

Fashola said, “We thank God that today, many achievements have been recorded in the state’s transport sector. I promise you that more transformations are on the way.”

The governor said the state administration would soon facilitate the purchase of 1,500 new cars for operators of the state’s traditional taxis to replace the old ones.

The government has so far assisted members of the taxi cab operators association to buy about 700 new cars as part of measures to phase out the old taxis. Other corporate operators are being encouraged to join the business.

“The taxi cab scheme has made it possible for people to call taxis from their homes. It is an indication that government has succeeded,” said the governor, who equally spoke on the progress recorded so far by the Bus Rapid Transit.

“The BRT has not only become a model in Nigeria, but in the whole of Africa.”
