Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has explained the circumstances surrounding his decision to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, citing the bonding of friendship with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as his driving motif, at a time when candidates on the platform of his faction of the PDP have defected to the Peoples Party of Nigeria, PPN.
Governor Daniel yesterday made it clear that “for me, the bond of friendship is of greater value and good than the pursuit of political gratification. The reason why I have decided to remain in the PDP is to demonstrate that politics should be about principles and the need to do the right thing at all times”.
Speaking through his Commissioner for Information, Sina Kawonise, the Ogun State governor explained that “as you are well aware, the majority of the members of our party, as well as those who see the good in our party made it clear long before now that they would not suffer any form of injustice from any quarters.
“They had also made their intentions very clear long before now that they were ready to shift camp in the face of an obvious infraction on their constitutional right, as well as the trampling on their political aspiration. We kept assuring them that the courts would do the right thing.
“Now that the move has been made, Governor Daniel, as a friend of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the presidential candidate of our party, can not just dump his friend mid way because of what somebody else has done.
“Governor Daniel is making it abundantly clear that he would rather make the sacrifice because of the bonding of friendship between him and President Jonathan and the demands of loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief – as Governor Daniel has always been – than turn his back on the latter.
“As a demonstration of His Excellency’s support for Mr. President, the PPN has also adopted President Jonathan as its Presidential candidate and the work would continue from there for Mr. President
“Governor Daniel is remaining in the PDP because he believes in the virtues of friendship and the rule of law, even in the face of demonstrable rascality in some quarters that do not mean well for our party but the willful propagation of their selfishness”.
It would be recalled that a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of PPN, Alhaji Raheem Ajayi, on Sunday said, “the National Executive Council (of the PPN) welcomes into its fold, the good people of Ogun State.
We are particularly happy to have with us, eminent personalities with proven integrity who are ready to team up with PPN in the struggle for the emancipation of Nigerian People. PPN is aware of the unfortunate situation in most of the parties, especially in Ogun State PDP, where one character, a self-styled god-father teamed up with a drug baron, who is wanted in the US and UK, have negatively influenced the judiciary also aided by the dysfunctionality of PDP and robbed the genuine candidates of their mandates having won at the party primaries.”
