Nigerian man arrested for naming his dog ‘Buhari’

A Nigerian man has been arrested by the police in Ogun state for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari.’

The trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, of No 10, Omikunle Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun State, was reportedly arrested last weekend, after one of his neighbours of Northern extraction complained bitterly that he named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari.

It was gathered that the complainant reported the case at Sango Police Station, last Saturday, after which the trader was arrested and detained. However, it was gathered that efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed following a clever move by the suspect.

The trader, said to be trading in female wears at a popular market in Sango, allegedly directed his friends secretly to kill the dog and possibly eat the meat in order to avoid being implicated.

It was gathered that consistent appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail.

The case, however, took a different dimension two days later when Chinakwe’s relatives went to Sango police station to further plead for his bail only to be informed that the case file and the suspect have been transferred to Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran.

A relation to the suspect, who simply identified himself as Chiedozie, told newsmen that his brother was being persecuted for no just cause and expressed fears that he may either be poisoned inside police cell or thrown into jail.

Chiedozie said: “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari.

Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.” Police sources, however, revealed that the actions of the suspect “were very provocative.”

The source said: “he not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.”

As at press time, relations to the suspect were still making frantic efforts to effect his bail while his accusers are insisting that he must be prosecuted. Police confirms arrest When contacted around 8pm yesterday, the acting Police spokesman in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, ASP, said he was still trying to get the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Sango for details.

Oyeyemi later called, stating that: “I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.” Continuing, he said: “He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.” When asked about the whereabouts of the dog that will be used as evidence against the suspect, the police spokesman said: “The dog cannot follow anybody except the owner. We will use him as our evidence because he did not deny it.”

  2. Some people are just evil. They don't just like peace at all. The North are up till today the majority part of this country, even if Nigeria divides the population of Ibos in the North cannot reside back home, so why choosing chaos instead peace. The man should rot in jail.

    1. If not for the love of Christ in my heart I would have insulted you.who conducted the head count and the north is more populated than the remaining part of this country. The man can write anything on his dog.we will see where its stated in our constitution, that you don't have a right to give your dog a name.did the north have a trade mark for buhari? Why are some peopl treated as though they are special than others.people name their dogs, names like Gowon, ojukwu,Azikiwe,we from the middle belt never fought any one for naming his dog Gowon, nor the igbos neverchallenge anyone for naming their dogs ojukwu or zik.why the north? People even name dogs bill clinton no one arest anybody.is buhari have the kind of influence clinton has?what is so special about the name of buhari that some one who like the name canot give his dog?We will see how they will jail him. They call gej all sorts of name ,he never open his mouth against any one. This because of president buhari not that his father's name is buhari.
      Let's stop this hypocrisy.

  4. This matter does not hold water at all as no has trade mark over that name. If it provokes anyone let that person go and wrought in hell. What nonsense, the name wasn't trade marked and so can be used by anyone.

  6. I suspect the motive of this story. In Nigeria constitution and under the law are (Personal/Individual) names exclusive rights of individuals or things? Could the same name mean the same thing for different people and in different languages and in different situations? The Police authorities must investigate this story before some over zealous people make mockery of themselves and the law and create unnecessary tension in the country. Long Live Nigeria!

  12. For the first time, a northerner is civilized enough to lodge a complaint against another. Unlike his kith and kins, he would have stabbed the Chinakwe dead and caused mayhem in their host community. He has my respect. Chinakwe should understand consider himself lucky to be alive and learn how to live in peace with others regardless of whatever belies his actions.

  13. That was a clear a case of provocation. If the complainants weren't mature and opted to seek the intervention of the law, we may have had a civil crisis on our hands. Who even writes the name of his dog on d body of the animal.

    1. He has the right to do that.why should they be provoked. If you call quoran they will provoke and start killing, you call Mohammed they kill, are they the only people in this country that have the monopoly for violent? Its because they know support will always come and in most cases they are always rewarded handsomely for killing in the name of provocative or blasphemy.
God is watching. He rewards everyone according to your work.

I know it should be ibo guy,Mr Man, i wonder why people of ur likes, likes transgressing limits.u search for trouble and u must see it.Why not put your name,ur father or your mother's name on the body of the dog instead of indirectly blaspheming other people's name,if u had done this in the North, u would have been killed by now.foolish and idiotic ibo guy.

  21. Nigeria is still far from the point. Some people name their dog ubama, and more interesting, it is normally person's name that is given to dog,i don't see any case in this rather guilty conscience. Police is just on the side of notice me job. If buhari is doing well, probably, the dog will be commanding respect. Nothing I will not see in this regime.probaly this innocent buy will go to prison since he can't afford at least 20 SAN to represent him in court, while the people that stole our money are cruising inside town.well, for naija, prison is made for poor man.
