Nanny who kidnapped Lagos children demands N15m ransom

A nanny, Mary Akinloye, who allegedly kidnapped three kids in the Surulere area of Lagos State has demanded N15m from the victim’s parents.

Our correspondent learnt that the family was contacted on Thursday by the suspect and others, who were suspected to be members of her group. They were said to have demanded the N15m as ransom.

NigerianEye had reported on Wednesday that the Orekoya family had posted information on OLX, an online sales portal, seeking the service of a nanny.

It was also gathered that Akinloye indicated interest and gave the Orekoyas the contacts of two people who she said were her relatives.

It was reported that the family agreed to formalilse documentation with the purported relatives before the week ran out.

After the 23-year-old resumed for work on Tuesday, she was said to have taken the three children ─ Aderomola (11 months old), Adedamola (4 years old), Demola (6 years old) ─ out, while their parents were away.

She had since not returned.

A family friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded N15m on Thursday.

The information was confirmed by another friend who put up the post on a social medium, Facebook.

He said, “Is it a crime to employ a house help? The kidnappers have demanded N15m.”

Efforts to reach the family were abortive as they continued to reject calls made to their lines.

They also did not reply to three text messages sent to them on the matter.

The Police Public Relations, Kenneth Nwosu, said investigations were on.

He said, “Investigations are on and that is all I can say for now.

“There are things you do that can jeopardise investigation.

“What is important in a case like this is to ensure that the children are returned hale and hearty. There are information you may have and if you disclose it, you could break the line of communication. So, we are still on the matter to ensure the safe return of the kids.”

  1. Interesting! It is high time this whole maid or help issue is looked into by our constitution. It should not be business as usual for the maids or their employers. Something drastic needs to me done the way I see it.

    1. Anne Ochia, Nobody brought her she was contacted via an online sales site, but the employer spoke with the maids supposed relation on phone and now the phone line is dead......it sounds stupid to me though. We are just too lazy, selfish and materialistic that husband would not allow wife to stay at home and look after kids while he fend's for the family and wife on the other hand wants to make her own money....even if they have those kids back and without paying a dime, that family will never be same again.

  4. Hiring maids or any kinda help on OLX and likes is totally wrong on all level..I mean welcoming a total stranger in to your home like that...nahhhh..I pray d kids are found and brought back and see perpetrators brought to justice

  5. Two things we should consider from this event;
    1. Its about time the government looks into the issue of maternity leave, I think it should be standardized for both private and public sector employment.
    2. There should be regulation on creches in workplaces. If the mother had a creche in her workplace ,would this have happened?

  6. The Police should be able to handle this matter speedily.

Apart from Maid or House help, the federal government should quickly finish the identity management system for the whole country. We must have a way to know who is who.

  7. I think there is more to this than meets the eye. In this email of kidnapping and ritual killings, why on earth will a sane educated person go online to request the services of a maid? And also let the person into the house and leave kids for the person same day she resumes, without seeing the purported relatives? Hmm, I await the police investigation, n d manner d ransom will be paid. My major concern is that those kids come back safe, cos dey are innocent in all of dis.

  8. May God preserve those innocent kids and return them safely back to their parents. Cant imagine the trauma the kids and their parents are passing through right now.

  9. @anon 8.09am. Am sure u r a fat lazy ass woman who sits at home eating ur husband's food. There s nothing wrong in a woman working and supporting d family but it is totally wrong to hire a maid from an online means. A family man who earns 60k a month with three children whose school fees will be paid, do u say such man's wife shud stay at home and not work? Let us all just pray for d safe release of d children. I don't know why the communications house from which d kidnappers have used to call can't help to trace where d call s coming from. All these will help bring such crime to book. Result judicata
