With a net worth of $150 Million, Nigeria's Bishop David Oyedepo, who is the founder of the Living Faith World Outreach Ministry, is the world’s richest pastor, according to US wesbite, richestlifestyle.com.
The publication describes him as “a prosperous pastor who owns private jets and homes in the US and the UK.”

Those who compiled the data don't know what they are doing, or they do not understand the meaning of "net worth". A person's net worth must take into account enterprises in which the person has an interest. Covenant University Otta and Landmark University Omu Aran, both of which are owned by Bishop Oyedepo are worth far, far more than the $150m quoted.

ReplyDeleteQuestion: where did all these pastors get the money they claim to have invested even into their private businesses. Offerings and thithes! While they teach their congregation that this world is not their own and that they will inherit the kingdom of heaven, they are amassing wealth on earth, flying on private jets. Even their private universities can not admit the common man whose money they collected to build. Because they are too expensive for them. Nigerians, wake up. I wonder what will happen if the present government enact a law that will prohibit the collection of thithes. Jesus Christ the founder of christianity said: Birds of heaven have nest to sleep, but he the son of man has no where to lay down his head.-Matthew 8:20. Are these pastors imitating Christ?
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at how people criticise and condemn Christian ministers for being wealthy. If you cannot show that a man has acquired his wealth illegally, you have no basis for condemning his wealth. First, Jesus Christ did not say Christians must be poor. Has it occurred to you that Jesus' coat was so valuable that the soldiers cast lots to decide who would have it?
DeleteGod has blessed Oyedepo and he has used his wealth to establish world-class universities in Nigeria. You fail to see that contribution to the country; instead you claim it is stolen money. You say the universities are too expensive for the "common man". Which world-class university is cheap? Stanford? Oxford? MIT? Harvard? If you want a university with world-class facilities - as opposed to your government's dilapidated infrastructures - you should be ready to pay for it. And open your eyes to the positive contributions the various Christian missions are making to the development of education in Nigeria - Covenant, Babcock, Redeemers, Madonna, etc.
One simple question I have for you. I would appreciate you answer me in a simple manner. All the property or call it asset...in whose name was these established....Bishop David Oyedepo or Living Faith? Who own the Living Faith Church...Oyedepo or the body of Christ? Who constitute the body of Christ....Oyedepo or the People? Who owns the base investment...Oyedepo or the People? Thank you.
DeleteI do not know who owns those assets. They may well belong to David Oyedepo as a person. You seem to assume that he used the tithes and offerings given in the Church to build those assets in his personal name. If he did, that is a matter between him and God. But he also has a right to his own investments and even personal gifts. I would not assume he converted money for the ministry to his personal use, and I suggest it would be uncharitable and preposterous to so assume.
DeleteDon't miss the thrust of my point: Regardless of whose name those assets have been acquired, individuals and Churches building high-quality educational institutions are contributing to national development. A very lowly-paid worker in a company I used to work for once said to me: "I wish people would steal plenty of money from the government and use it to establish industries and farms where we can work." Did you get that man's reasoning? An article in an international journal compared corruption in Nigeria and Malaysia. The writer said the levels of official corruption in both countries are comparable, but that Malaysia is miles ahead in development because those who steal public funds there use the money to establish enterprises that provide employment for the citizens, while those who steal public funds in Nigeria stash them away in foreign banks! So, our problem is not whether Covenant University is owned by the Church or by Oyedepo's family. Covenant University and similar institutions are a positive contribution. Start to think positively instead of suspecting that every wealthy Nigerian is fraudulent.

ReplyDeleteNigerians are a gullible bunch! How many Nigerian pastors do we have on that list? People are shouting about curruption as if that's our biggest problem we face in this country. To me our biggest problem lies in the passions of the mind, one of which is greed!

Anyone who's pained that am getting too rich should go and hug a transformer plzzzzzz. enemies of progress. there will always be the poor in our midst, the bible said so, so its left for you to choose which of the divide you belong and stop this envy, nobody forces anybody to pay offering or tithe! am proud to be a Christian any day any time.

DeleteMy dear friends, some of us are so quick to say Jesus rode on an ass or that his coat at death was beautiful. Meaning Jesus was wealthy! Far be it. All the churches are just business using their flock as a conduit pipe to fame. Jesus never lived ostensibly. Remember when he was arrested, he was identified by the soldiers and priests by the kiss of Judas. Meaning a crowed of 13 persons, you can't say who Jesus was. His dressing and attitude was like any one in the crowd. If you are new to Naija for example, and very early to any of these churches, you can guess correctly as they enter the churches who is pastor Kris, Oyedepo, Adeboye, Okotie , Oritsejafor etc. Yes the bible did not say a Christian can not be rich, but as supposed servants of God, they must emulate the appistles(Jesus aside). They never enriched themselves. They saw this world as a sinking ship. Their investment was in heaven. But the pastors are saying it bust be heaven and earth! Haba! Paul who was a successful lawyer destroyed his wealth for the good news of God.
