There is God oh: Nigerians mock Patience Jonathan's English on social media

In a very turbulent and intense period in Nigeria, characterized by the massive insecurity problems in the country, and most especially, campaigns for the release of over 200 teenagers abducted by the Boko Haram terror group, Nigerians have designed viral video edits on Facebook, Twitter and instagram with images including T-shirts and caricature of wife of the Nigerian President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, to mock her for speaking pidgin English while addressing Mrs Asabe Aliyu Kwarmbula, the Principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State over the abducted 234 students of the school at a press briefing.

The two minutes, 38 seconds long video has generated a lot of reactions on social media with many Nigerians sharing links through which it could be downloaded. And many social media users have had a bit of fun with it, with Patience being at the receiving end of the ascerbic attack. 'Na only you waka come'

Popular comedian, Omo Baba Number 1 also recorded a very hilarious song, featuring the First lady.

Also some Nigerians youths on social media, edited the video and added hilarious speeches by popular ex-lawmaker and grammarian, Patrick Obahiagbon and NSCDC boss, Obafaiye Shem (Oga at the top)
It can be recalled that Shem of the 'Oga at the top' fame also is not new to viral bants.

After the video went viral on the internet Tuesday, the viral images swept the internet with inscriptions on T-shirts mocking Patience over the way she reacted to the issue.

Some of the T-shirts had inscriptions like: Na Only You Waka Come?; There is God O! Chai Diaris God O! among others.

There was also a caricature of Patience saying, “This Blood You People Are Shearing. There is Goodduu ooo…There is Goooodduuu oooo…”

Mrs. Jonathan had summoned the school’s principal, Mrs. Kwarmbula and an unnamed staff of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, over the abduction of 234 schoolgirls by the Boko Haram insurgents on 14 April.

She also sounded to have addressed the Principal as 'prisipal'

While interrogating the principal, the video showed Patience asking the school principal if she came with two teachers, who could probably testify to the issue.

Mrs. Jonathan asked: “What of two teachers that can tell us that they conducted that exam? Do you come with any…na only you waka come? Okay!”

She then went on endlessly exclaiming, “There is God oh” and then broke down in tears.

Some NigerianEye readers also faulted her tears on National TV, as well as her English

Gabriel Uko said: Very humiliating!!! President's wife breaking down in front of cameras!!! Does it mean it mean that they government has admitted defeat and resort to begging???? I mean if the President's wife breaking down like this, what hope is there for the rest of us??? The perpetrators must be hi fiving each for bringing the government to their knees. My advice for the President's wife or anyone from the government, is to stay away from the cameras if they cannot compose their selves!!!

  3. All these are not the issue. She was just expressing disappointment at the unserious behavior of her invitees. whether she spoke pidgin or latin is not the issue; the issue is that the people she invited are economical with the truth concerning the circumstances leading to the abduction of the girls. May be the domestic sponsors have arranged for the girls to be comfortably kept in the neighbouring country so as to spite the government of Jonathan. The truth is yet to be out.

    1. Mr Nwachukwu. The point you even failed to notice is that the woman was surreptitiously try to say that the young women were not kidnapped. This is, coming from her, is disingenuous at best, shameful at worst.

  4. NE which side you dey? It is glaring that you are an avowed enemy of PDP and Ma Patience Jonathan. We can not build this nation on tribalism and parochial journalism. If you are not building, obviously you are destroying. Let us not hate for no justifiably reason. Those who disdain excellency and royalty will never attain it.

    1. Err...English is Nigeria's first language. Putting the issues with the girls aside for a minute, can we just talk about the fact that the first lady of Nigeria can not speak English. I thought education was required to become someone of that importance but I guess since its Nigeria, anything goes. Yes there are other languages spoken in Nigeria but the fact that she is a first lady, the wife of a president of a whole country highlights the importance of basic English. Is everyone forgetting that this is just basic English that she can't speak? She is an embarrassment to Nigeria and putting us to shame. If you can speak basic English then why can't the first lady of Nigeria do? Back to the issue with the girls, Nigeria's sluggish response to the matter makes it seem a little bit staged. The leader of the extremist group stood in front of an armored vehicle and I'm pretty sure those are not sold in garages. They also had guns and for God's sake this guy showed his face on national TV without fear of being caught or apprehended. He is taunting Nigeria and proving the well known fact that the Nigerian government are absolutely useless and all they care about is their blood money. Even the guy who recorded them knows who they are but trust the spineless police and military in Nigeria to not give a damn. This is quite disappointing as they are blowing this issue way out of proportion whereas, it could have been contained by Nigeria but they chose not to do anything until the whole world got involved. This whole matter is very shameful and it makes me question the whole idea behind Nigeria's government. It almost makes me want to question their independence. Nigeria seriously needs to step up their game and stop disgracing us in front of the world.

  8. If she had kept away herself away from situations that has nothing to do with her office and allowed her husband to do his job we have been saved of all these troubles. Her siblings has a role to play by prevailing on her to come out only when it's extremely necessary. The woman should have brushed herself up all this while. It's a collective disgrace that this woman is not just our first lady but a permanent secretary in Bayelsa state.

As there are none in Nigerian police, accept the help of the outside world. Swallow your pride and do what is necessary to find the girls. Stop playing politics with their lives.

  34. Whether Good English or Bad one, she convey the message abi? When did it become a crime to speak Pidgin? OBJ spoke pidgin than any president and nobody scorned him, but with MAMA PEACE, everybody want to cast a stone. What would GEJ or his wife would do to please Nigerians? Sometimes I am amazed at the way Nigerians take serious on trivial matters that makes no sense at all. Is Patience's english the problem now, not the missing girls again? the fact that many of her invitees didnt show up to explain what happen at the backyard is no longer a problem, it is her reaction at the meeting? wouldn't u question thesame or doubt it when people who suppose to be bothered most on the abduction show less concern? My dear I will doubt the glarity if your daughter is kidnapped and you show less concern on moves to free her. That was what the first lady was trying to say. She never said the daughters were not kidnapped. I watched the whole episode of that meeting.

    1. Pidgin is not an abomination, she cannot speak her tribal language because Nigeria is a multi-ethnic and multi-dialectical. Her pidgin is not an official language neither is her tribal language, therefore, neither is representative of the entire country. Leadership is dependent on how well you can represent the people that you lead. Did I answer you questions?

The important thing Nigerian should observe is to see the genuineness in what Patience had done instead of criticizing are English. English na our Original Language?

    1. Sometimes I just wonder what the problem is with us Nigerians. To start with Patience has no whatsoever right to institute any panel of whatever. We say english is not our language but pls tell me what our official language is?

  40. No matter what this woman has said she does not deserve all these. Why can' t we pray for those in authority instead of criticizing them. This is not a commendable speech by the first lady of our beloved country Nigeria. The speech she gave has no relation with the topic at hand. The grammar itself is nothing to write home about and this caused noise in the communication process and there was no message being passed across to the general populace because it was totally off point and the audience where lost.
