Nigerians blast Doyin Okupe for calling President Jonathan, 'The Nigerian Mandela'

Nigerians have reacted to Dr. Doyin Okupe’s comparison of President Goodluck Jonathan to the late iconic South African president Nelson Mandela.

Okupe, senior special adviser, to the president said “Nelson Mandela was a great leader, he lived his life for the people of South Africa. I check through the history of Nigeria, among our past and present leaders, the only one we call our Mandela is President Jonathan. There is no president in Nigeria that has sacrificed 13 hours to discuss with ASUU.”

Doyin Okupe
Many Nigerians immediately took to the popular Nigerian forumn Nairaland to respond to Okupe.

Payless says:

Taking sycophancy to the next level. Praise singers are all of what GEJ has. They refuse to tell him the truth. They see green and tell him it is actually red. Putting GEJ in the same level as Mandela is an abomination. Okupe would have said the same thing if he was a mouth-piece for Abacha.

What a disgrace!

Lakesider says:
Yes o he is d mandela
Thats why
1.ASSU is on strike
2.thats y kidnapping has increased
3.thats why power supply has droped
4.thats y he and his wife go for medical abroad
5.thats y he gave presidential pardon to a thief
6.thats y lagos ibadan express road is a death trap
7.that y poverty has increased
8.thats why he got drunk at AU Assembly
I m sure okupe was drunk too when he said this.this Gej has turned nigeria affair to beer parlour affair.smh

Fkaz says:
Inferiority complex at work, what is the essence of sitting down with ASUU for 13hr without result?
How would he compare a freedom fighter with an opportunist, jona and his spin doctor are fooools

A-ZeD says:
Mandela is considered great because he transformed South Africa economically or otherwise, he is considered great because he did not preach hate or divisive politics also known as 'he is our brother' mentality.
GEJ and Mandela in the same sentence is blasphemy and treason.

Berem says:
It is an insult to compare Jonathan to Mandela. If Jonathan is to be compared to another leader,it should be Mobutu Seseseko. Please don't ask me why!

Solapex says:
really? The mandela of nigeria is GEJ? These pple always take nigerians for granted. Doyin Okupe is the most foolish man I ever met in my life. How dare you! Mandela of this world?. That tony blair discribe as the light of world? That obama said he was the hero of the ages? This is an insult to the world.
Come to think of it. Can mandela tells the pple of SA he doesn't give a dame? Can mandela says 16>19? Can mandela says that 5 of 32 house assembly members impeach a speaker?. Can mandela allow universities in SA to be shut for just 1 week not to say of 6 months? Can mandela support the electoral fraud that happened in Anambra state? I can go on and on. Mandela is a very secure leader and GEJ is the most insucure leader I ever seen in my life.

SimpleSeyi says:
My fellow country people, is it good that Doyin Oku-Igbe is bringing international insults to our beloved country by comparing the Madiba to Jona? Please can Doyin Oku-Igbe answer these questions?

1. Did Madiba use more than one term as president?
2. Did Madiba ever go abroad for medical attention like Jona and Dame Sheppopo always do?
3. Did Madiba use over one billion naira per year for food when Madiba was president?
4. Did Madiba's wife die and resurrect in a German hospital due to cosmetics tummy-tuck operation?
5. Did Madiba's wife close airports, roads and entire state where she go like Dame Sheppopo always do?
6. Did Madiba chase all assumed political enemies leaving his presidential duties like Jona is doing now?
7. Did Madiba's wife go about fighting elected state or regional governors/leaders like Dame Sheppopo is fighting Amechi?
8. Did Madiba go to a foreign country, get drunk with ogogoro and land in hospital which is an impeachable office as Jona has done about three times now?

However, like they say, there are 2 sides to a coin... some agreed with Okupe

Rossike
Jonathan has been a far busier president than Mandela ever was. Mandela took over a South Africa that was for all intents and purposes, already developed, with infrastructure, power, good schools etc etc already in place. All he did was basically sit in his airconditioned office drinking tea and preaching peace and reconciliation. Jonathan on the other hand, is out there on the streets, in the hot sun, commissioning rail projects, commissioning power projects, steel plants, airports, road projects, fighting ASUU, fighting Boko Haram, and all these other developmental issues.

In fact if Mandela had ruled in Nigeria, I doubt he would have been more effective than say the late President Yar'Adua or maybe Abdulsalami Abubakar. Jonathan is a dynamic leader. A man of action.

Tomakint says:
What many Ignoramus here don't seem to know is that, even if the great Madiba Mandela was to be a Nigerian President, he would be rubbished, Nigerians are terribly difficult set of humans to be governed! Jonathan may not have attained to the height of Mandela but by Nigerian standard and with his politics of 'reaching out to his political foes' makes him come closer! I am yet to see any President in the history of this country as magnanimous as Goodluck Ebele Jonathan!

Others also blasted Okupe on Twitter

Adebayo Adesola @Feyishayur tweeted: “One question for Doyin Okupe: In the event of GEJ’s demise, will the EPL mourn him, talk more the whole world?

#JustAsking “Are you sure Doyin Okupe does not need a psychiatric evaluation. #GEJ compared with #Madiba! We no go see fire inside well o!,” OJOAK @ojoak responded.

Here are other responses from Nigerians. Dec 15th @LionelNicklas “An insult to Mandela”.

Toyosi Odusanya @TOYOSI_NO1 “Looks like Doyin Okupe just loves insulting our ears sha….. I will just ignore and refuse to get angry.”

Demola @demo5000 “Doyin Okupe is delusional this corrupt system has taken his sense of reasoning and judgement that made him compare a weakling to Madiba”.

Tunji @heymode “President Jonathan should sack Doyin Okupe for making such a sick statement and send him to Yaba left too”.

Aruoture John @Aruoturejon “Doyin Okupe needs to earn his pay as a Presidential Squealer but he should stop being ridiculous with statements bordering on sycophancy!”

Olusegun Dada @DOlusegun “Doyin Okupe should be pitied at this point. No need being pissed at him.”

Mr Ben @yzma_360 “Mandela refused a 2nd term in office. That’s enough difference.”

Omobolanle @MobolaOjo “Is this an achievement? No other president has spent 13 hours in a meeting with ASUU.”

  1. Kubi Ben :One thing that makes me happy in all this rubbish statement of Okupe, is that people are beginning to understand that this clueless government of Nigeria are just devastated and confused but because they are shearing the national cake very well among them selves they are busy feeding the press with sentimental comments, lies and disgraceful attitudes, how can Ngozi okonji iweala come out to the public and tell us that they have paid in N200b in central bank for ASSU while she know that they are just running around to make for the cash and maybe because I came from the same village with her I will say that theirs nothing wrong in what she did, God forbid that I will sell my conscience to inferiority complexities and go to church to ask for forgiveness later, but what marvels me most is how fools still see light in this dark age of our country without receiving any bribe or even empty promises, but I say now is the time to speak out against this wicked government, it may take the next generation to avart this mess we have found our selves in but am beginning to see lights in our future and I want to make this clear today, Nigeria have not start practicing Democracy yet and I don't even know what we are practicing now because there is too many mix up in all our sectors.

  4. WHERE IS NIGERIAN MANDELA??

On thursday night the world lost one of its true giants of the past century. Nelson Mandela was a man of incomparable honour. Unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve. He stood for what is right and sworn to live or die by it. And until now one of the words that fills the lips of many Nigerians is 'When are We Going To Have A Leader Like MANDELA'...after listening to a friend saying same, something strucked my heart. Its a question.. " Are Nigerians Ready to Vote in Such A person?"And that even if Mandela contested ,would he have WON?..NO! I doubt if the kind of greed and corruption that has become the order of the day will allow us Vote such person.
A Good example is CHIEF GANI FAWEHIMI, of blessed memory. It was all clear in the eyes of Nigerians that Gani stood for what was right. He was for the Masses. And when he contested for president having seen power as a means to reach suffering was not voted in. Infact he lost in His own Local government. And we voted in other parties that we all know does not care about us. So it is high time we started looking the other way and shun this corrupt and wicked people and looking forward to VOTE in our own MANDELA in 2015. Let us be guided as the balls is in our courts again.

  5. The greatest problem Jonathan has is bad advisers and sycophants surrounding him. But come to think of it, who put them where they are. Our leaders are all praising Mandela, but how many of them are ready to emulate him. Okukpe's comment is like fouling the air in the presence of dignitaries!

  6. We should actually pity Doyin Okupe. I am beginning to doubt his sanity. He should be bundled to Yaba left for urgent attention. Political harlot. Oku igbe.

  7. To be a great leader you have to be in Nigeria.
The last few weeks GEJ has been visiting, Germany, France, Israel, London and America.
He has not got a clue what he is doing, he is surrounded by problems, but he chooses to do nothing.
Boko Haram, four years they have been killing people, and they still continue to do so.
Asking America and England for help, just shows what an irresponsible leader he is.
Goodluck Jonathon, you fight Guns with Guns, not prayers, or words.
The sooner Nigerians wake up, and vote for a new president, it will be a much better country.

  10. I think this man Doyin Okugbe (Okugbe in Yoruba means ''a stinking corpse) is crazy. Does he have children. What do his children think about him? Why must he rubbish Nigeria at every oppotunity he has. I don't blame him. I think it's partly the fault of our media. They give him too much audience (may be to rubbish himself and his "Mandela, anyway). O' Allah, this punishment is enough. This set of leaders are punishment for Nigeria. Kindly raise leaders for us that will lead us in battle against these idiots that call themselves leaders. And give us a new and fulfilling Nigeria. A Nigeria of our DREAM. Aminnnnnnn.

It is an insult to compare GEJ with Abacha talkless of a whole Mandela. Anyway, I don't blame him but he has to lie that his clueless oga is in order so as to retain his useless job.

He is a useless hungry man but he is trying to survive.

  17. GEJ can you allow a matchstick compared to an electric pole. That's what Okukpe has done and I scarcely believe you would have allowed him air that statement if he was to consult you first. Anyway, you see the ridicle Okukpe has put you by running his unbriddled mouth and singing your sycophancy. Tame him now or he will compare you to Jesus tomorrow.

  20. This man called Okupe is not only ignorant but stupid at the same time. This is a very dangerous combination. I believe he bought his paper 'qualifications' on the internet and mange to wangle himself into all these political offices while more intelligent and better qualified Nigerians are languishing on unemployed.

Madiba would have sacked a thieving and corrupt minister and Officials on the spot and would not commission a stupid report to buy time and sweep the issued under the carpet Madiba would not issue pardon to convicted Criminals who are still on the run and wanted by other countries for crimes committed.

Mandela tried to set example to despotic African Leaders by standing down after serving just One Term in office and asking younger South African Leaders to take up the baton. He could have hung on for many more years like African Leaders like 80 year old Paul Biya in Cameroon; Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo who has been in power in Equatorial Guinea for 34 years; 89 year old Robert Gabriel Mugabe who has been in power in Zimbabwe for 33 years. The list of African great despots goes on. Even our own Obasanjo to his disgrace tried to join them by trying to amend the constitution to allow him to serve more than the stipulated 2 terms.

Its a Crime for an idiot like Okupe comparing bungling, stupid and corrupt accidental leader like Jonathan with a True Giant of a Man like the Madiba.

  32. Before we praise Mandela we should ask what he did when he was the president. Before Mandela became the president the whites, that is, Americans and Europeans did not see him as a great man that they should protect from the Aparthied regime. He laid his life down to fight for the freedom of his people for doing this he earned the honour of all back people. When Mandela became the president he surprised the whites all over the world by not acting like Ghadafi that would bomb an American plane nor Robert Mugabe that would seize the white man's land, rather he chose to offer the whites peace, forgiveness and reconciliation. for doing this the whites all honour him. They are not singing the praises of Mandela as the first African leader to put a black man in moon or space. He did not achieve that. They not praising Mandela for spending billions of dollars of south african money on Africa peace mission like Nigeria did during crises in Liberia and Serialone. He did not achieve that. They are not praising Mandela for achieving decline in the rate of spread of H.I.V in South Africa. He did not achieve that. They are not praisng Mandela for achieving decrease in crime in South Africa. He did not achieve that. They are not even praising him for fighting for the liberation of his people, something he achieved. The truth is south African economy has seen a decline in the hands of post apartheid black leaders. There is increase in crime rate and H.I.V. The whites are for Mandela just because they did not see vengeance in him.

  34. Doyin Okupe is just a slave and a stupid man. I think people from that side have the tendency to say rubbish when the are in such post. Tom Ikimi was a good spokeman for Abacha. So why are we disturbed about Doyin's utterance. He is just working for his pocket. After your office, may u experience jail so that you can compare what it takes to be a HERO(MANDELA) and a ZERO(JOHNNY)

  37. Comments are not moderated here, otherwise, how can some one call his president a FOOL in your media, and you approve it. It is only in Nigeria that people can abuse their President with raw words, and get away with it, or are applauded. No matter how you hate somebody, or disagree with him, that should not give rise to insult, how much more the office of the president of a nation. All these Boko Haram attackers have never, and can never do any good to this country. Let them not talk to us as if we are visitors, we were here when they ruled and ruined the country for over 40 years. What else do they want?
