VIDEO: Soyinka Blasts Nigeria’s First Lady Over Rivers Crisis

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka accuses Mrs. Patience Jonathan, wife of President Jonathan of stoking the crisis currently rocking her home state of Rivers in the South-south of Nigeria. A visibly angry Professor Soyinka also asks the President to call his wife to order.

Professor Soyinka  came down hard on the President for engineering the chaos besetting the Rivers State House of Assembly. The professor condemned the role of President Jonathan and his wife saying the wife has been using the security apparatus of state to intimidate the governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi.

Too much is too much. She is now being used to reduce the authority of an elected governor,” he said as he described the situation in the state as an emergency.

Although the  playwright  enjoined Jonathan to intervene in the crisis in order to restore normalcy to the state Assembly and the entire state, he fired a salvo at him: His seeming indifference  led to the pandemonium in the Assembly on Tuesday.

He said,   “There is a certain way a leader can convey certain coded messages to his  followers and they will be acting accordingly. That President Jonathan might not have openly declared support for what is going on, his comportment, his carriage and most especially, his silence might have indicated his meddlesomeness in the matter.”

Making a comparison between Tuesday’s incident on the floor of the  Assembly and the circumstances that led to the 12th Century murder of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, on the orders of King Henry II, he warned that the crisis in Rivers might   lead the country into what he described as absolute monarchism, if not quickly checked.

  1. Well, I live in River State and I can state with full confidence that Neither president Goodluck Jonathan nor his wife had any hand at what happened that day. Wole Soyinke should please take that back.

It was the so-called house of assembly member (5 in number) that caused the whole problem.

  9. @Tundun, somebody is beating the drum the 5 were dancing to. The President's non-challant and complacent attitude with all the wife has done in the past in that state shows he is d invisible hand in the fight. Prof may nt be 100% right bt he sure is over 90% right and that is a good grade.

  10. Mr Prof. Wole Soyinka this impunity at insulting the person of the first lady must STOP. The problem in Rivers State is an orchestration of Gov Amaechi with high handedness and arrogance in the affairs of the state.

  11. No 1 commentator ,I don't think you are following the event in Rivers state..why did mrs Jonathan went to Port harcourt and telling people that she knows that the lost glory of the state will soon be recovered ,noting deteriorating state of things in rivers state in company of Peter Odili and co..those who are worst than Ibori. This one who want to use five man vote to become speaker of the house is an in-law to patience.
Prof Wole Soyinka, you have spoken well sir,may the Lord help them to amend their ways.
Wike is also behind this evil.

  15. Uneasy lies the head that bears the crown, it is not strange that at the bark of every dog GEJ is responsible. Hence everyone is quick at throwing blames and insults at the person of the President. Let us not be quick at calling names at every opportunity because we simply want to be heard or relevant. Respect those in authority, they need you and I more than we need them. One day just like every other person they will give account of their stewardship before God Almighty. Let us pray for them continually to be steadfast and upright in what is committed before them, cause they are faced with all manner of spiritual battles everyday, on their own they can't make please. Don't be misled by the physical appearances, they are delusion. Let us all pray and encourage them always, no one man can make all the difference we so desirer except by the grace and mercy of God. Insubordination, greed etc is eroding the nation.

  18. Rubbish! I keep wondering who is who between Police commissioner and an elected Governor.

Who is that 4kin Police commissioner and where he got the gut if not as a result of the instructions from oga at the top otherwise, PC can't dare a whole elected Gov, look here in Nigeria the laws are not working and that is why abnormalities are everywhere.

This impunity must stop besides, the whole wold is looking at us and that is one of the reasons why they don't respect Nigerians outside the soil of this country, our so-called leaders don't paint the image of this country well, just imagine.

I don't not need to talk about Tundus, it is obvious he was blabbing.

  20. @Tundun, I can only imagine hw u make ur own comment ... well it only show ur level of understanding. True talk Prof. in-case u need clarification ask the president/his wife and Nyesom Wike. There is little or nothing you can do to any elected officer holder, because they have their mandate. Nigerian voted them in.

  25. Prof Sir, we due respect, kindly restrict yourself to more of academic and intellectual matters. Not politics. Do not allow your esteemed self to be dragged into this muddy political water in Nigeria. Politicians are not to be sided on any issue whatsoever, Amaechi, Goodluck etc inclusive. They are all the same. All Shameless.
