114 graduate with first class in Covenant University

A total of 114 students of the Covenant University, Ota, in Ogun State graduated with first class honours, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The first class students were among the 1,466 who were awarded various degrees at the institution’s 8th convocation ceremony.

The Chancellor of the University, David Oyedepo, said at the event that 720 of the students made Second Class (Upper Division), 565 Second Class (Lower Division), and 67 Third Class.

Mr. Oyedepo said that 111 of the students were awarded Master’s Degrees while 30 others obtained PhD. He said the university’s Board of Regent had mandated it to become one of the best 10 universities in the world in the next 10 years.

Mr. Oyedepo said that the mandate was known as “Vision 1 of 10 in 10’’. He said that the board had also approved the adjustment of the institution’s academic calendar in line with best practices.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Charles Ayo, advised the graduating students to strive for excellence in all their endeavours.

The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, who was the guest speaker, urged developing nations to embrace the principles of the “new economy’’.

He delivered a paper entitled: “Transformational Leadership and the Quest for Global Relevance.”
Nebo said: “The world economy is now global, highly competitive and driven by knowledge.

“The world has evolved into a global knowledge economy that has no patience for ignorance and indolence.
“In this new economy, talent, entrepreneurship, creativity, innovation, ability to network and capacity to develop, nuture and master complex dynamics, drive personal economic success and success of nations.”
Mr. Nebo said that, for the first time in documented history, Sub-Saharan Africa was witnessing robust growth, and that Nigeria was one of the growth leaders.

“Africa is being looked at as a ray of hope and the bastion of growth. These opportunities promise to come if we are able to bring about transformational change in the way we do business and in our educational system,” he said.

He charged the students to be relevant in the new economy, where the individual was the knowledge worker.

  18. I am of the oppinion that the system that produced the first class should be checked by standard practise, once found clean, good but if not, that is when the degree shld b challenged. Thank you

  20. This is barbaric and despicable! I assume those students will have a feel of thinking they're brilliant when in real sense I can barely pass a standard examination. It is rather unfortunate that they think is a heroic feat.First class should be a reward for exceptionality and not a reward for effort, CU has finally joined the already enlisted private universities with no regard for educational excellence. A school in the likes of CU shouldn't have more 10-20 first class graduands at a time. This is a rot and a sad situation of the highest end. U need to revamp your system, it is key.

  25. Failure mentality is what is affecting most of the commentators. You forgot that the school in questiion is a religious one with high moral standard and academic discipline, high quality facilities and amenities and conducive environment with the best teaching and non teaching staff. You want to compare covenant university to the glorified universities in nigeria. Wake up. The 3rd class students are better than the so called 1st class graduands of nigeria universities. I challenged all of you for a debate. The taste of the pudding is in the eating! If you want the best for ur siblings, go for the best school. Soup where sweet, na money de killam, abi no bi so?

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is ridiculous! The management of Convenant University should be informed that what makes a first class degree 'sweet' is in the discretion to award same only to the brightest and the best - in character and learning. To cheapen this will only ridicule the university and the recipients. This must be reversed immediately please.

    You see now!!
    its not all about grammar.
    Kudos to yo all.
Now the so called rich have created yet another niche. this time, for their wards.

  32. Interesting, very interesting for some of the comments here. Thanks you Mr. el-matosky for your comments in response to mine. I don't have to open my eyes or brain as you said. Though an insult, I will take it in good faith. Could you help me answer this question? What makes you think is that difficult to get a 1st Class? Any University with the right environment can produce as many 1st class as possible. Go to our Federal and State Universities and see what is happening there. Is a complete pile of shit. No good infrastructure, nor qualified lecturer, some are busy selling and intimidating students with hand outs, strikes etc. I have been opportuned to seat one on one these students from CU, those kids are good I tell you. I promised you one thing, you will change your views in two to three years to come about these kids.

  33. FRIEND! recently a NIGERIAN student made HISTORY in RUSSIA. Does that mean the standard there is not CONDUCIVE 4 FIRST CLASS?
114/1466 is too high. Since their standard is HIGH that shld make their GRADING SYSTEM HIGH also. Lets face the FACT in NIGERIA nothing is REAL.
    Take it or leave it!
