Jonathan, forgive Boko Haram the way my husband pardoned Niger Delta Militants— Turai Yar’Adua

Turai, wife of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to forgive the Boko Haram sect as her late husband did to former militants in the Niger Delta.

The former first lady advised Jonathan not to listen to anyone who advises him not to grant the sect amnesty.

She said this in Lagos on Friday night during the Award Gala Night organised by the Niger Delta Young Professionals.

Turai said, “When Yar’Adua saw that the people in the Niger Delta, particularly the children were dying callously, he (Yar’Adua) took it upon himself to grant amnesty to the militants to ensure lasting peace.

“There is poverty in the North. What Yar’Adua did in the Niger Delta, let Jonathan do the same thing to the North.

“Mr. President should not allow his advisers to deceive him. Let him sit down and think about the insecurity in the North.”

She said she respected her late husband and would continue to do so till her death.
She also advocated youths’ empowerment, saying if the youth are empowered, the country would be empowered.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has blamed northern leaders for the continued Boko Haram violence.

The President, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, said northern leaders had not done enough to unmask those behind the group’s activities.

He said, “When the issue of Niger Delta was raging, and I will say this with all sense of responsibility, leaders of the region, particularly the governors, were the drivers of the process.
“They reached out to the people and to the militants, they spoke and took their discussion, to an appreciable level before the Federal Government stepped in and then harnessed everything.

“What efforts are the northern leaders making? We need to learn because every incident of Boko Haram in Nigeria is situated within the geopolitical confines of a region. What are the leaders doing?
“Security agencies are not magicians – they are not spirits. These people who perpetrate these crimes do not come from the moon; they live within them. Why are they not helping the security agencies with the needed information? The problem of insecurity is not only the problem of government – it is the problem of all of us.”

He said the Federal Government was making efforts towards solving the problems.

“What we solicit from Nigerians are understanding and patience,” he stated.

He said when the late Yar’Adua and himself decided to take the initiative to address the restiveness of Niger Delta militants, they knew the people they were speaking to and knew where they could go and see them, either in their creeks, headquarters or homes.

“We reached out to them and spoke to them. We understood each other and on the basis of that, an understanding was reached and it was this understanding that was faithfully executed that led us to the amnesty in the region,” he said.

He said in the case of Boko Haram, their perpetrators were unknown, except for a few of them who spoke on the Internet or to the press.

At the awards five persons were recognised including late Yar’Adua (posthumous); Akwa Ibom Governor Godswill Akpabio; his Lagos State counterpart, Babatunde Fashola; Chairman, Arik Air, Mr. Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide and 10-year-old author, Daniella Dan-Jumbo.

  1. Jonathan does not have the power nor moral obligation to "forgive" bokoharam. However he can only extend the olive branch of amnesty to a terrorist organisation that has never even demanded for amnesty. This amnesty is being suggested for bokoharam with the hopes that they will accept, it is ironic that the people suggesting this amnesty are thesame people that have condorned, sponsored, and habored theses terrorist and their activities.
So you give amnesty to genocidal maniacs, what of the families of those that have been murdered and slain for no reason other than their religious beliefs?
    God is watching you Bokoharam

  2. Boko haram members kill, maim and destroy both Muslim and Christain lives and property. They are unknown and are using religion to justify their actions. If we give them amnesty, what is the guaranty they will not continue their atrocities underground since they are no afraid to die through suicide bombings and other forms of mayhem?

  4. There is a great difference between Militants and Boko Haram. Militants, were fighting for the welfare of Niger Delta. while boko haram are fighting to take over Leadership and change the various cultures of Nigerians. So granting them amnesty is giving them more room to kill who they want to killed.

  5. I shake my head for all of you. Amnesty? Amnesty??? These people want to islamize Nigeria and you want amnesty for them? We knew what MEND was fighting for and many of us understood their cause. A trip to an oil producing village will convince you. But Boko Haram is a demonic and hate filled group sent my the Northern cabal to destabilize Nigeria bcos Goodluck came to power. Mr President if you grant those ppl amnesty I will pack up my bags and leave Nigeria cos they r going on a bombing spree and I'm outta here.

  10. Turai or whatever you call yourself, you are talking rubbish. You are not giving Mr. President a good advice. I wonder why northerners are calling for amnesty while the fundamental question has not been addressed. Are Boko Haram ready to accept amnesty and stop killing? Are they ready to abandon their cause - Islamization of Nigeria (or northern Nigeria)? Militants intentions for fighting then are not the same with those of Boko Haram. If amnesty is granted to Boko Haram, what about the other Islamic group (JAMBS)? Why should government give them money or pay them in the same of amnesty? Without this payment will they drop their gun? How are we sure that this call for amnesty is not a plot to get money from the government? These are some of the issues that should be looked into before you talk of amnesty

  15. Maybe I think Jonathan should pick u up as his special adviser on Philosophical and Boko Haram issues. Dats is where u will be in a good position to advise him. Hw dare u compare devils with activists? Did Boko ask u for amnesty? Did de North tell u they are suffering? Hw many times hv u come face to face with a Boko Haramist? U dnt offer amnesty to a ghost unwilling to take it. If de North r really suffering, they knw the who-is-who in Boko Haram, they should bring dem out , ask dem dia problem and ask dem if they want amnesty. That's when we will b talking abt amnesty. U get me? Or are u de Boko Haram spokesman?

  19. Nobody should compare boko haram to any other group or individuals that have been granted amnesty....NEVER!!!! Those people dint kill or destroy but boko haram did and are still doing.they are not fighting for a cause but are terrorists..The Northern leaders should just come out and state that they want to be treated like the militants which is impossible cause u guys got nothing.

  20. Dear Mr. President,

As you grant amnesty to boko haram, please grant amnesty to all prisoners in Nigeria so that we can all start afresh. I do not think any prisoner has committed a worse offence than the one of BK. Talk of murder, wanton destruction of lives and properties of innocent people

  22. Where are the Boko Harams? Those ones who have died suicidal? Did the Niger DELTA Militants kill and died like Boko Harams? Did they destroy lives and properties like the Boko Harams? Niger Delta Militants were seen physically. But we don't know these people called Boko Harams. Are they asking for amnesty or are they asking for islamisation of Nigeria? Give the ghosts amnesty and you are giving them the opportunity to reach all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria because by giving them amnesty you relax and then you come and see them in action more than what you see them doing now. I was in the north for 15 years and I know what these murderers can do. Let them come out and show themselves if amnesty should be given to them.

  23. It is really ridiculous that the people we voted into office, the people that took oath to protect lives and properties of the electorates are not living up to expectation. Is it that non of them can come up with any solution to contain Boko Haram's menace. It is difficult to wipe out terrorism but we know that their activities can be curtailed. It's unfortunate. Oh! Nigeria, which way?
